Product : AT3600Serial Number : TC221/5329Unit self test : Self Test PASSAccessories : Measure Fixture with Spring Probes
Transformer / Inductor : Transformer / TransducorQuestion : Dear all,

we use in our production some of your ATi and AT3600 System.
Now we have a transformer for a 100 KHz application. For this transformer we use on one side a margin tape for the right positions of the wires. Sometimes there are no margin tape an the wires is on the hole bobbin. Is it possible to check with C2 test of AT3600 the right positions of the wires on the bobbin?

Best Regards
Andy Schmidt

Dear Andy,

Thanks for the question.
Apologies for the delay in my reply.

Could you help me understand what the margin is for?
Is it there for safety reasons?
A, i.e. to prevent the winding breaking over the core?
B, is it there to prevent breakdown to the other winding?
Or is the Margin there for other purpose?

Looking at the drawing you kindly sent to us, I could not tell what the single margin is for.
Are you likely to test a complete transformer or just a bobbin as shown on your picture?
Is there a reason why the margin is put only at one end and not on both ends?

Regards
Joe

Hello Joe,

the margin tape is for the air and creepage distance from primary to secondary side.

The windings from primary must be have an safety distance of minimum 4 mm to the pins of the secondary. The wire must be mounted between the margin tape and the pins of the primary pins.

We would like to check the final transformer, if the margin tape is inside or is the needed distance fulfilled.

If you have any questions, please contact me.

Best Regards
Andy

Hi Andy,

Thanks for the additional information.

The AT could not check whether the safety minimum distance you require between windings (in this case 4mm minimum) is achieved by using the C2 test.
However, an aggressive high voltage test (Hi-Pot Test) could be applied to check for the insulation breakdown between windings - Primary and secondary.
This is a good way to confirm to relevant standard i.e. 3kV for 60 seconds dwell time, the transformer must be designed and constructed to withstand the required voltage level.
You can then do a Hi-Pot test at 4kV with 1 - 2 sec dwell time for production testing.

Please let me know if this works for you.

Regards
Joe
