Laminates     Back To Applications

The AT36000 is perfect for testing laminate or iron-cored transformers because it has a built-in, fully programmable ac source. This means that the AT3600 can measure magnetizing current and multiple open circuit voltages quickly and accurately. Tests of up to 270V, 2A can be conducted as standard with the AT3600 or up to 600V, 10A with the AC Interface.

What's needed to test Laminate Transformers?

  • Measurements need to be carried out at the functional operating point of the transformer (e.g. 110V, 60Hz) because of non-linear core characteristic {tech note library}
  • Switch-on surge can be large, requiring over-size source or the careful ramp-up of both current and voltage sources.
  • Multiple windings require connections to be moved from winding to winding for voltage measurements.
  • Safety HiPot tests are often required on line-frequency transformers.
  • The operator should be protected from the high voltages present during test.
The AT3600 Solution
  • The AT3600 provides fully programmable ac source tests at any voltage or frequency in range.
  • Unique ramp-up and down algorithm avoids surges, ensures de-magnetization of the core and performs tests faster than simple switch on / off.
  • The integrated high-voltage relay matrix automatically switches between windings, allowing measurements on multiple windings in the fastest possible time.
  • Integrated, programmable 5kV HiPot tester.
  • Safety interlock works with safety systems such as light curtains to ensure operator safety.
  • The AT3600 Transformer tester has the proven ability to be able to offer both low voltage and high voltage test solutions in a single, high-speed and reliable test station.
Test Sequence

R - Resistance
R is the direct current, (DC) resistance offered by an inductor due to the resistance of the winding.
This checks that the correct wire has been wound.

VOC - Voltage Open Circuit   1V to 270V@ 20Hz to 1.5KHz
This test applies a voltage to the primary and reads the voltage induced in the secondary winding.
This checks both the turns ratio and polarity of the windings are correct.

IR - Insulation Resistance   100V to 7KV@ DC
Resistance tests are designed to check for poor shielding and insulation between windings.

MAGI - Magnetizing Current   1V to 270V@ 20Hz to 1.5KHz
Magnetizing current is the combination of the current required to magnetize the core and the current required to supply the losses in the core.

STRW - Stress Watts   1V to 270V@ to 1.5KHz
At a no load and with the secondary open circuit a transformer will still draw current which is proportional to the core losses (eddy currents and hysterisis).
Faraday's law suggests that providing the voltage and frequency is increased proportionally core losses should remain the same. Therefore if a dramatic power increase is detected it would indicate a winding fault.

HPAC - High Pot AC   100V to 5.5KV@ 50Hz to 1KHz
Hi-pot AC tests are isolation safety tests, which test the isolation between windings and between winding and core, winding to shield.

This is just an example of the tests available to the AT3600, for a full test listing please see AT3600 Tests.
