Ferrite Core Transformers     Back To Applications

Ferrite cored transformers are used for power conversion and control in a wide variety of equipment such as power supplies, lighting ballasts, invertors and UPS, all of which demand a broad range of different test, often carried out at different voltage and frequencies.

The AT3600 is a superb test solution for these transformers not just because of the vast range of tests that can be applied quickly and accurately, but also because it can be configured to test a completely different batch of transformers within minutes.

What's needed to test Ferrite Core Transformers?

  • A programmable impedance meter that can measure inductance (L), resistance (ac and dc) and Q at different voltages and frequencies.
  • Multiple meters (or multiple connections) to measure turns ratio between windings.
  • Means to short-circuit windings so that leakage inductance can be measured.
  • Compensation for stray impedances.
  • 4-wire (or Kelvin) connections for the most accurate measurements.
  • Measurements of insulation between windings.
  • Means of recording results and / or signaling a PASS or FAIL to the operator.
The AT3600 Solution

The AT series testers provide all that is required in one integrated test station.

  • A 0.05%, 3MHz laboratory grade LCR meter
  • A 20-way switching matrix.
  • 4-wire connections throughout
  • An insulation resistance tester
  • PASS / FAIL indicators
  • Optional PC results storage and analysis
By having all these building blocks in one station, under the control of one microprocessor, Voltech can provide accuracy, high-speed and reliability without compromising any one factor.

With a Voltech AT3600, you can perform safety HiPot testing to 5kV ac as well!

Test Sequence

CTY - Continuity
Continuity is a test designed to ensure that the transformer is correctly seated in its fixture and that all winding termination is good.

R - Resistance
R is the direct current, (DC) resistance offered by an inductor due to the resistance of the winding.
This checks that the correct wire has been wound.

LS - Series Inductance   1mV to 5V @ 20Hz to 3MHz
Ensures the correct core material has been used and that the number of turns is correct.
Range 1nH to 1MH

QL - Quality Factor   1mV to 5V @ 20Hz to 3MHz
Ensures that core material and its assembly is correct.
Unit of measurement, Q. Range 0.001 to 1000

ANGL - Angle of impedance   1mV to 5V @ 20Hz to 3MHz
Ensures that the core material, wire resistance, number of turns and inter-winding capacitance combine to meet design specifications.
Unit of measurement: Degrees. Range -360° to +360°

LL - Leakage inductance   1mV to 5V @ 20Hz to 3MHz
Ensures that windings are positioned correctly on the bobbin and that any air gap included in the core design is the correct size.
Range 1nH to 1kH

C - Inter-winding capacitance   1mV to 5V @ 20Hz to 3MHz
Ensures that the insulation thickness between windings is correct.
Range 100fF to 1mF

TR - Turns Ratio   1mV to 5V @ 20Hz to 3MHz
Ensures that the number of turns on each winding and the winding polarity meet specification.

IR - Insulation Resistance   100V to 7KV@ DC
Resistance tests are designed to check for poor shielding and insulation between windings.

HPAC - High Pot AC   100V to 5.5KV@ 50Hz to 1KHz
Hi-pot AC tests are isolation safety tests, which test the isolation between windings and between winding and core, winding to shield.

This is just an example of the tests available to the ATi, for a full test listing please see ATi Tests.
